When it comes to summer we will, more often than not, change our wardrobe for the new season. In the same way we change our wardrobe, changing our skincare regime in summer months can make sure our skin shines and always looks its best.

Summer brings with it a unique set of challenges for the skin. There is (hopefully!) increased exposure to sunlight, more wear from being outdoors, salt water from sea swimming, chlorine for lazing in pools, all of which when combined leave our skin feeling dry, worn and damaged.

Hydrated skin is happy skin and it’s keeping the skin hydrated, with natural organic skincare products, which is the key to keeping it healthy and happy.

There’s no perfect fit when it comes to skincare. We all have different skin that responds in different ways. What’s important is finding a skincare solution you’re happy, comfortable and confident with.

The following tips will help whatever your skin type and leave you glowing inside and out…

Nurture & Nourish. Through summer, try to avoid products that leave your skin feeling dry. The skin needs to be nurtured and nourished to leave it looking its best. Using natural organic oil is the best way to do this.

Washing your face with water is great to leave you feeling refreshed but it won’t cleanse or nourish your skin. A good oil helps works with the building blocks of our skin - essential fatty acids, cholesterol and triglycerides - to keep it moist and soft.

After you shower use an organic body oil to restore your skin’s balance. Our award-winning organic body oil contains arnica, apricot kernel oil and vitamin E-rich evening primrose oil to rejuvenate and nourish; plus plantain, calendula and patchouli – all prized for their ability to promote skin cell regeneration.

Protect. Prevention is better than a cure and protecting your skin from the elements is a sure-fire way to leave it looking great. The most important area to protect is the face. Don’t go out in the morning without an organic daily face oil or an intensive mosturiser. Both our organic daily face oil and line-softener intensive formula are packed full of antioxidants and natural ingredients with rejuvenative properties. If you’re skin is especially sensitive to the sun, it’s always a good idea to apply an SPF cream that matches your skin type.

Replenish. Recovery is a vital aspect to feeling and looking good. Just like your muscles after exercise, your skin needs time to recover. Replenish your skin with a weekly face mask. This deep-cleaning treat will leave you feeling wonderful. Our superfood face mask is a wonderfully uplifting and rejuvenating face mask to detoxify and repair the skin. Brimming with antioxidants and essential fatty acids, and so rich in Vitamin E, it is the perfect weekly detox.

The secret is to find what works for your skin, makes you look incredible and leaves you feeling fantastic from head to toe.

Our skin has a hydro-lipidic film formed by a complex lipid matrix. This lipidic matrix keeps the skin moist, soft and to protect it from the damage of external environmental elements including ultraviolet rays, A and B.

It’s essential, especially in the summer when our body in much more exposed to the the day light (thank goodness!) and the penetration of ultraviolet rays, to keep the skin nurtured and nourished. That’s why we recommend the body and face oils.

As well as your skin, don’t forget your hair! It needs care and love as well… Don’t use aggressive shampoos, but very delicate ones. After swimming wash it getting rid of sea salt or chlorine and then spray on it some light organic hair oil to protect it. You can add hair oil also before going into the water, to reduce the risk of damage.

And if the feet are dried and cracked because of the heat or walking on hot sand and rocks, rub them with Inlight Foot & Leg balm before going to bed. It’ a balm for them, not only to nourish them but also to help give you a deep relaxing sleep.

Our tips for great looking skin this summer

How to look good this summer

Summer has arrived, blue skies and bright sunshine are on the horizon and we all want our skin looking its best through the summer months.

If you’re anything like us you’ll grab every moment you can to be outdoors through the summer. This is one of the joys of the warmer weather but it brings with it a fresh set of challenges for our skin. From being out in the sun to swimming in the sea, our skin will go through a lot if we enjoy summer to its fullest.

That’s why we’ve put together our tips for having great looking skin this summer, from eating a balanced diet to making sure you give your skin time to recover through better sleep.

Here’s how you do it:

  1. Eat the rainbow

No, we don’t mean eat lots of Skittles! Eating a varied diet, full of natural, organic, colourful ingredients will do wonders for your skin, your body and your wellbeing. Make sure your diet includes a medley of fresh veg as this will give your immune system a boost, improve your energy levels and give you wonderfully clear skin. Try to avoid processed foods and foods packed with sugar as the chemicals in them will lead to impurities in your skin.

  1. Stay hydrated

Drinking water helps to flush toxins and waste products from our body, prevents dehydration, and helps us look better, too. Start your day with a glass of water with some freshly squeezed lemon in it. This will kick-start the detoxification of your skin each day. Healthy skin is hydrated skin so if you want your skin to look good you have to drink plenty.

  1. Exercise more

Regular exercise helps improve physical, chemical and emotional health. And by making us feel good, it helps our skin look good. Exercise is something our bodies crave and frequently don’t get enough of. It’s a great way to let off steam and reduce stress as well as helping our body release endorphins which make us feel good. Regular exercise isn’t about getting sweaty in a gym, it can be anything from a lunchtime walk to cycling to work.

  1. Sleep better

There’s a reason it’s called a beauty sleep! The body goes into repair and recovery mode when it sleeps. By sleeping better you’ll be giving your skin chance to recover and retain its healthy glow rather than looking tired and drained. If you have trouble drifting off why not try our Organic Night Balm? It’s full of ingredients that means you’ll wake up to beautiful, glowing skin.

  1. Treat your skin to oil

Whether it’s our daily face oil or our body oil, the regular use of oil on your skin this summer will help protect it, nourish it and let its beauty shine through. Water will refresh your face in the hot weather but oil will cleanse and nourish it. Once you try our daily face oil as part of your skincare regime, you’ll never look back!

Some clients and patients often ask me why they should use oil on the skin…

The answer is very simple: if you use water would you be able to clean you face from dead cells and pollutants or simply from the skin impurity? As we say above, you can use water to refresh your face but not to cleanse or nourish it!

This summer, after a swim in the sea or in a swimming pool, have a shower and use an organic body oil to replenish the skin of pure and natural and oils, massaging it onto the skin until absorbed: they will mimic the effect of the natural sebum, produced by the skin sebum glands.

Alongside this, once a week have a deep face cleansing using a facial mask to gently exfoliate the epidermis and in the same time to nourish the skin. Inlight superfood mask is great for it, combining a delicate and natural exfoliation with an anti-oxidant and nourishing action!

How natural smells make the world a better place

The fresh scent of cut grass, the smell of a field full of wildflowers on a summer’s day or the aroma of the morning coffee. All these smells, along with thousands of others, are instantly recognisable.

Smell is all around us and, more than any other sense, has the ability to trigger emotion. When your olfactory receptors are stimulated, they transmit impulses to your brain. This pathway is directly connected to your limbic system, the part of your brain that deals with emotions. That’s why your reactions to smell are rarely neutral - you usually either like or dislike a smell.

Smell is also a direct route to our memories and can conjure up waves of feelings and emotion in an instant. This is part of the reason we all want to smell good. We know that our scent will influence the world around us and a bad smell can very quickly have a negative impact on us.

Smelling good is important but it’s easy to fall into the tap of covering ourselves in artificial scents. Whether it’s a deodorant, perfume or aftershave, chemical smells will harm our balance, wellbeing and energy.

One small molecule of unnatural fragrance seems to be nothing in the atmosphere, but if there are billions around us sprayed by millions of people, the picture changes drastically. It is time to think about our decision and be more conscious about the impact on the planet that our decision will produce…without forgetting our personal health.

‘A waterfall of memories’

That’s why we use only 100% organic essential oils chosen for their individual scents and action on the skin, combined synergistically to maximise their quality. The oils, as well as containing excellent healing properties, imbue the skin with memories of uncontaminated meadows; directing our senses to the beauty of a natural smell.

According with the old herbal alchemic tradition, natural, organic fragrances keep the “soul” of the flowers, manifesting their subtle energy. It’s this energy that triggers our emotions and a waterfall of memories through the power of smell.

This applies also in the relationship between mother and baby, man and woman, male and female animals. It is much better to create new emotions and memories with a pure perfume rather that with a fake one…

We believe in the enveloping beauty of natural smells. That’s why we’ve chosen a special Eau de Toilette, called Eau de Philae, made according with an ancient formula found on the isle of Philae in Egypt, and produced by our sister company Cemon Srl.

This vibrant product, fresh and light full of citrusy notes, contains within natural fragrances, also botanical extracts to blend in a unique way different parts of the plant world. The result is an uplifting scent that gives a hope for the future.

I could tell you how many studies have been carried out showing the danger of chemical fragrances (in commercial deodorants, perfumes, home fragrances) both on babies and mums or generally on people increasing the risk of allergies and contributing to the world pollution, but I think choices should be made for love and not for fear.

Personally I recognise immediately a fake scent passing close to someone wearing an antiperspirant or a deodorant for “macho men” and I don’t feel well. Maybe because in our small delightful lab immersed in the beautiful landscape of the Cornwall countryside we use only natural and, more than natural, organic essential oils.

When people come in our reception room, close to our production area, to visit us or just for delivery a parcel the first sentence they say is: “Oh my God, what incredible smell!” I don’t think they would say the same with a fake, unnatural smell.

Yes, natural oils and scents are expensive but the price pays for a joyful, better, scented world. And that’s the kind of world we would like to see.
