Nettle

Nettle (urtica dioica), is one of my favourite medicinal herbs. Although it is a popular plant in folk medicine, the excellent health giving properties of this much maligned herb are now often sadly overlooked.

You can find it growing almost everywhere, and its famous sting is due the presence of formic acid.

However, nettle is rich in flavonoids, mucilage, Vitamins (A, B2, C, K, pantothenic and folic acids), chlorophyll, xanthophyll, beta-carotene, Calcium, and Potassium. The roots contain sterols, tannins, and polysaccharides and the seeds are rich in lipids, essential fatty acids (omega-6), phyto-hormones and phyto-stimulants.

Nettle, as a tea, fresh juice, decoction or tincture is a great spring tonic because of its many nutrients, vitamins and minerals. It cleanses the blood and the body from metabolic wastes and has a gentle, stimulating effect on the lymphatic system, modulating the elimination of toxins through the kidneys. Dioscorides (the Greek physician, pharmacologist and botanist, 40-90 AD), suggested the use of the seed decoction in wine as an aphrodisiac.

Nettle is rich in iron and Vitamin C: the latter helps with iron absorption, so the combination is a powerful blood builder. It is therefore an excellent herb for those suffering from anaemia or fatigue, especially women.

Nettle is also anti-inflammatory, so it is excellent for rheumatic problems. As a skincare ingredient, it is toning, astringent, and antioxidant, due to the chlorophyll, beta-carotene and Vitamin A. Nettle is a key ingredient in the Inlight Organic Body Butter, Organic Line Softener, and Organic Nyp Balm.
