ALS (Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate) in Skincare

With so many companies making claims about being free from this, or free from that, it often appears that we are spoilt for choice when it comes to “safe cosmetics”. There are buzz words and phrases used by skincare companies to imply that they are free from potentially harmful chemicals. “Free from SLS” and “Free from Parabens” are some of the most common, and although I highly advise that you look for products free from parabens and SLS, I also recommend that you look a little closer at all the ingredients…I recently noticed a product being marketed as “Free from SLS and Parabens”, but one of the main ingredients was “ALS”. ALS, or Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate, works as surfactant, ie a chemical that allows a solution (cream) to be more able to dissolve oils, greases etc. Unfortunately, it belongs to the same family of chemicals as SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate) and has similar health risks including irritation of the skin and eyes, possible genetic mutations, cancer, organ toxicity, neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption, ecotoxicology, biochemical or cellular changes, and developmental and reproductive toxicity. (Environmental Working Group (EGW): Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database)

The CIR (Cosmetic Ingredient Review) report in 1983 concluded that both sodium and ammonium lauryl sulfate “appear to be safe in formulations designed for discontinuous, brief use followed by thorough rinsing from the surface of the skin. In products intended for prolonged use, concentrations should not exceed 1%.” But my concern is always the accumulation phenomenon, the cumulative effect in medium and long term on the end user health. The body has many ways (e.g. through the liver, kidneys etc.) to detox itself but when exposed to potentially harmful chemicals and other pollutants on a daily basis, there is a risk that the body cannot cope. The result is the accumulation of toxins in to the body with all the health consequences.

Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate is often found in the following products: Shampoo, Body Wash/Cleanser, Facial Cleanser, Liquid Hand Soap, Acne Treatment, Hair Color and Bleaching, Relaxer, Exfoliant/Scrub, Dandruff/Scalp Treatment, Bubble Bath, Foot Treatment, Shaving Cream (Men’s), and Anti-ageing products. I believe that products containing ALS should be avoided in any circumstance, but especially for babies, children and vulnerable people.
