We’ve all been there. Snuggled into the sand as the sun beats down on us and the sea laps the shore or sinking into sun-lounger bliss sat by the pool, only to end up looking more lobster-red than beautifully bronzed.
Soaking up the sun is something we love to do. And sunlight is good for us. It’s where we get the majority of our vitamin D from, it boosts our serotonin levels (the body’s natural happy hormone) and it helps us relax.
However, like all good things, the sun is best enjoyed in moderation. Too much sun will damage and destroy our skin, replacing the healthy glow with a dried, cracked and painful feel. Caring for your skin before, during and after you’ve been in the sun is the best way to stay looking your best.
Here’s how you can do it…
What to eat and drink - Staying hydrated and drinking plenty of water is vital if you’re spending a day out in the sun. Dehydrated skin becomes hard and scaly so make sure you always have water with you. Carrot, tomato, cherry and pomegranate juice are also great options as they are packed full of skin-friendly nutrients.
Essential fatty acids, such as Omega 3 and Omega 6, are brilliant for your skin. You’ll find them in various beans, squashes and cabbage and walnuts. Try and avoid foods high in salt as they will heighten water loss. Instead go for fresh salads and raw vegetables to keep you cool and your skin nourished.
What to put on your skin - Make sure you exfoliate before applying anything to your skin. This will remove any dead cells and improves hydration. After you’ve mositurised, use an organic sunscreen and apply before you head out and regularly while you’re in the sun. Remember you can never apply too much and if in any doubt simply re-apply!
What to do if you burn - You should always try and avoid getting burnt but we know that sometimes it happens despite the best efforts. For the best aftersun care, wash with cool water then apply face oil and body oil. Our natural organic body oil with arnica is full of ingredients such as plantain, calendula and patchouli which are prized for their ability to promote skin cell regeneration. A rejuvenating face mask, like our superfood mask, once a week will also work wonders for you.

The key to healthy, calm skin when it’s exposed to the welcome sunshine lies in looking after its natural lipid barrier, so underneath your daily SPF give your skin enough antioxidant protection to help neutralise free radical damage to the skin’s collagen.
Avoid soapy cleansers and harsh exfoliators and keep skin well moisturised and cool all day long. If your skin is very sensitive use a body oil even before the shower during the summer months to reduce stinging as the water hits your skin.
Always shower with lukewarm water and avoid exposure to direct sunshine between 11am and 4pm if you want to prevent skin irritation.
